I’m a freelance travel writer and underwater/nature photographer. Based near Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Australia, I specialise in stories covering active, nature-based adventures; travels with my beloved Cavoodle, Moondance; and locations with literary, musical, and film connections. I also love exploring the ocean’s wonders and capturing inspiring underwater images.

My travel writing journey began more than 20 years ago, after I moved to Australia. Since then, my travel stories and photographs have appeared in a range of Australian and international publications, including News Corp Australia’s Escape, Great Walks, Dockwalk, Boat International, Australian Traveller/International Traveller, Southern Boating, Yachts International, and Australian Geographic.

I’m a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW), a not-for-profit organisation devoted to promoting ethical and honest travel. One of my stories, covering my initial arrival into Australia, is included in the ASTW’s Red Dust and Wanderlust, a collection of Australian travel tales. Another, featuring my experience at Mountain Lake Lodge, Virginia (setting of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing), will appear in the ASTW’s upcoming anthology.

The ASTW runs an annual Awards for Excellence. My award-winning and finalist entries have included Best Travel Photo winner (2017) and finalist (2018); Travel Photographer of the Year finalist (2018, 2015, and 2014); Instagram photo finalist (2018); and Responsible Tourism story finalist (2018).

I also won the Diver category of the 2014 Cairns Underwater Film Festival and was a finalist in the Music and Pictures category of the 2017 Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year competition.

In addition to travel writing and photography, I occasionally create videos for my Kara Murphy Travel YouTube site. These videos usually have an outdoor travel focus, and they sometimes include one of my original songs.
